No Names, More Thumbnails

When you’re looking at a bunch of image thumbnails, filenames seem almost superfluous. You can eliminate the display of filenames (and thus leave more space for the thumbnails) by holding down the SHIFT key while opening or switching to a thumbnail view. To restore filenames, just repeat the process.

Default websites in Firefox

Always open the same five sites first thing every morning? firefox lets you open them all at the same time to make the start of your day easier.
Just open the sites in the tabbed order you want to view them, then go to Tools>Options>Main and click "Use Current Pages" then hit OK.

The word "IN" in Google Search

Using the word "IN" allows you to find out how much one quantity is when converted to an equivalent quantity.
If you're looking for currency conversion, you can type, for instance, 10 dollars in pounds, to find out the British equivalent.
You can do similar things if you want to convert something from one measurement to another (50cm in inches)

Windows with the same view

Windows XP tries to anticipate the preferred way to display files listed in Windows Explorer. If you prefer that all folders be displayed the same way (i.e. showing full details of each file), setting these preferences for each folder can be a drag. But XP lets you set your preferences globally.

Go to Start>My documents, click on the Views icon, and select a view.

Then click on the Tools menu and scroll to Folder Options. Select the View tab and click the Apply to All Folders button.

RAD Video Tools

Today I tried to find a way to convert a .mov file to a .avi file. I found this wonderful tool (and free, absolutely) which is called "RAD Video Tools". It can convert one movie type to another fast and easy. Try it here or here.

To use it, it's easy. Firstly, run the software, choose file you want to convert, then click "convert a file" button.

In the next windows, choose output filename and file type. Then click "convert"

Another windows appears to ask you to choose compression type. Choose the compression type you want and then click "OK". That's it.

A lot more features can be found in this software, so explore them. You can save a sum of money for alternative commercial softwares.

Knot knowledge

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Problem: I used to know how to tie a lot of knots when I was in scouts. Is there a good site to refresh my skills?

Solution: From scouting and climbing knots to boating and fishing knots, here is a site that doesn’t just tell you how to tie them—it shows you. Animated Knots by Grog (www.animatedknots.com) has step-by-step instructions with images. Whether you used to be a knot pro or know nothing about knots, this site untangles the mess of trying to tie two things together.

The right amount of paint

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Problem: The last time I painted a room in our home, I overbought the paint and ended up with extra gallons. I want to use the remainder to paint another room, but I’m afraid there isn’t quite enough left. How can I figure out the right amount?

Solution: The Interior Paint Calculator is what you need. It’s one of a number of handy online tools on the Easy2DIY site (www.easy2diy.com). To find the paint calculator, go to Task and select Painting. Then click the How-To Tutorials tab and then the Interior Paint Calculator. Now that you’re here, it’s all a matter of simply filling in your room’s details (length, width, and height, as well as door and window info), and you’ll get a recommendation for the number of gallons/quarts for walls, ceiling, and trim.

Media Monkey 2.5.4

We’re going to climb out on a limb a
bit and spotlight the MediaMonkey. As
our digital music collections grow, we
want this software on our machines.
MediaMonkey is better than anything
we’ve used for browsing, mass tagging,
converting, and playing large libraries.
From the way it lets us search and tag files
to the way it segregates incomplete tags
and dupes for editing, this program
knows how music nuts work with their
collections. The Monkey’s interface is a
bit scruffy (for example, the player window
and some type can be exceedingly
small), but for burning, tagging, and
shuffling thousands of tracks and albums,
this primate swings.
